Description

Naming your concerns

In this course we focus on NAME, the second part of our SNAPS process. Once you've spotted signs of concern, it can be tricky knowing how to raise concerns with colleagues because we worry about saying the wrong thing or not knowing what to do, especially when there are high levels of distress involved.

This course will help you to feel more comfortable with having these conversations.

Objectives

Learning goals across the course:

  • Know how to use the "toolkit" of active listening skills
  • Outline the steps to setting up an effective conversation, before you have it
  • Identify what to do (and what to avoid) when communicating with a colleague who is struggling
  • Practise new skills for engaging with an employee who is reluctant to talk about their mental health, or who becomes tearful, distressed or upset
  • Know how to put a crisis management process into practice to equip you to respond during difficult situations, including supporting someone who is suicidal
